This episode of Turn Me On, Dead Man opens and closes with tracks released on the Heavy Psych Sounds label. The episode opens with the Italian band Demonio and Emile (of Sonic Dawn), and closes with a very fruitful collaboration between Bob Balch (of Fu Manchu, Big Scenic Nowhere and Sun and Sail Club) and Yawning Man. This episode also features a collaboration between the Minneapolis band Chatham Rise and Mark Refoy (singer/guitarist for The Tell Tale Hearts (UK), Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, Pet Shop Boys, currently in Slipstream). And, of course, the artists in this episode are from a variety of countries: The Space Huns (Hungary), Flyin Up (Uzbekistan), Ailuria (Mexico), Fire Down Below (Belgium) and the Jansson’s Temptation Experience (Sweden).

The drops in this episode are from different sources. As I mentioned in the last episode, Joe’s Record Paradise is the place I go for interesting old vinyl albums. Recently, I bought a copy of John C. Lilly’s album Sounds And The Ultra-Sounds Of The Bottle-Nose Dolphin. John C. Lilly is a fascinating person. He was a sort of renaissance man, and a true psychedelic scientist. He studied the effects of isolation tanks, as well as using psychedelics while in isolation tanks. He studied the vocalizations of dolphins, and experimented with human-dolphin communication. His work inspired two Hollywood movies: Day of the Dolphin and Altered States. Imagine my surprise, then, when I listened to his album Sounds and Ultra-Sounds of the Bottle-Nose Dolphin, and found it to be inexplicably boring. I have no idea who he thought the audience for this would be. You’d think that someone who generated so much discussion and public interest would make some sort of irresistably provocative record but no, definitely not the case with this album.

Emile

#FreakFolk #HeavyPsych #PsychedelicFolk #PsychedelicRock #Sludge #Stoner

Spirit is the second album by Danish-French Emile, otherwise known from the acid rock band The Sonic Dawn.
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Spirit?
Emile: Spirit was recorded at a very special and beautiful place in the countryside. I spent quite a lot of time there by myself, both writing and recording. So much of the album is inspired by nature and that contemplative state of mind you reach when you’re complete alone for longer periods of time.
Also, the record is written as a sort of counterpoint to my previous one, which was rater dark and melancholic. Many of the songs serve as reminders or as an active pull to get out of a bad state.
As you mention, the song is about leaving your usual circles behind and look for something new. New inspirations, new experiences etc. Rater than just always tracking the circle of your own footsteps. The song structure itself is based around circular patterns growing bigger as the song progresses.
TMODM: What record changed your life?
Emile: Hard to answer – there are so incredibly many! My life is revolving a lot around music, and i constantly discover things that make me look differently at what I do, and at things in general. A few that has been a big inspiration while writing Spirit is Relatively Clean Rivers – s/t from ‘75 and Jorge Ben’s s/t from ‘69. Both incredible explorative albums.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Emile: Next for me is playing a bit live. I’ve been presenting these songs in different live formats – alone in a classic singer songwriter fashion, with percussion and ambient tape samples and with a small trio. I’m working on building up a small group to play the material. Apart from that I’m working on a new record with my band The Sonic Dawn, and another very experimental but still secret project.

Fire Down Below

#Alternative #DesertRock #Grunge #PsychedelicRock #Stoner #StonerRock #Doom

Fire Down Below is from Ghent, Belgium.
Kevin Gernaey – Lead Guitar
Sam Nuytens – Drums
Jeroen Van Troyen – Vocals, Guitar
Bert Wynsberghe – Bass
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Low Desert Surf Club?
FDB: Low Desert Surf Club was mostly written in strange times, when people were confined to their houses and live music was banned. Even putting four guys together in a room to jam was borderline illegal. Yet, we made the decision not to lament and wee, but instead make an album full of positive vibes and hope for better days to return soon. So we started writing songs that made us feel like we were driving through wide-open deserts, exploring new lands or partying at the beach all day and all night long. After restrictions were lifted we continued to write with a focus on that ‘road trip through the desert’ feeling. So after exploring outer space on our second album Hymn of the Cosmic Man, this album feels closer to the vibes on our debut Viper Vixen Goddess Saint.
TMODM: What record changed your life?
FDB: The answer to this question will be different depending on which of us you ask, but to me, hearing Nevermind by Nirvana changed my life. It was my first introduction to heavier music. It made me start playing the guitar and inspired me to write my own songs. Still to this date, just like the grunge pioneers, I love to have distinct verses and choruses you can sing along to in our songs. Our first single ‘California’ is a fine example 🙂
TMODM: What’s next for you?
FDB: The new album will be released on the 8th of september. In the meantime, we’ll throw in a few extra teasers and singles. So keep your eyes peeled to our socials! And then, we’re ready to hit the stage again and play for you guys as much as possible.

Yawning Balch

#DesertRock #HeavyPsych #PsychedelicRock #Sludge #Stoner #StonerRock

From Bandcamp: “Bob Balch here. In November of 2022 I went out to Joshua Tree for a day of jamming with the guys in Yawning Man with the intention of calling it “Yawning Balch.” No riffs were planned. We just plugged in and played. The only discussion beforehand was that Gary Arce and I wanted to mess with tons of guitar pedals. I knew that while we were jamming it sounded great, but it wasn’t until I got home and listened to it all that I realized we had something special. It’s hard to believe that we jammed for five hours and got two full length LPs and then some out of it. Every player killed it on these recordings and I’m beyond grateful to have my name involved with this legendary band. Fingers crossed they invite me back out annually for more jam sessions. I hope you enjoy these jams and please use responsibly. “
TMODM: You really did achieve something special with Yawning Man. Is there more on the way?
BB: Thanks. Yep! Volume 2 in a few months. Already done just trying to space out the releases.

Demonio, “Three piece heavy psych from hell”, are from Italy
Anthony – Stratocaster/Vocals
Paolo – Drums
Matteo – Bass and Production

#Experimental #IndieRock #PsychedelicRock

The Jansson’s Temptation Experience are from Linköping, Sweden. They’re a psychedelic rock band inspired by the 1960s and 1970s.
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Lasse, Stefan & David?
TJTE: Our biggest two influences on the album are the early Tame Impala material (InnerSpeaker and the previous singles) and the Swedish psych/folk-rock band Dungen. We’re also very inspired by the classic late 60’s psych jam style with bands like Pink Floyd and The Doors.
TMODM: What record changed your life?
TJTE: A record that definitely changed my life was Edward The Great, the best of album by Iron Maiden. I remember borrowing the CD from my dad and it was from that moment I started to love music for real. I also want to throw in Nirvana’s Bleach, because it made me want to become a frontman guitarist.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
TJTE: We’ve just finished setting up our own studio and are going to write and record a lot of new music, as well as shooting music videos. So keep up with our social media If you want information on that! We have a couple of gigs planned here in our home town Linköping, but we’re also hoping to continue to grow and get international gigs to be able to show more people our music.

Flyin Up

#Alternative #Ethno #PsychedelicRock

Flyin Up are from Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Jimlik (“Silence” in Uzbek) is the band’s research on various metaphysical questions embodied in songs that have been composed over the last 6-7 years.
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Jimlik?
Flyin Up: The creation of an album took several years, it grew with us and we put our life experience into this. Revelations that came out through our acid trips, good and bad relationships, new countries and many other things united us and helped us to grow and get on the next higher level. So is the album that leads you through love and anger, apathy and encouragement, is circled: the first track begins from the last track and is a reflection of our way to the next level throughout the years.
TMODM: What record changed your life?
Flyin Up: There are a lot of different records we love, but I assume that the album that united us more than any other should be Lateralus by Tool
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Flyin Up: We do not build plans for the future. The previous years were expressed through art, and we’d be glad if this process won’t stop in future. But, we definitely don’t want to make new music like we are forced to do it. Anyway, it’s not everything that we dropped for now: next month we’re going to release a one-hour music video as a support to our album.

Ailuria

#Alternative #ProgRock #Electronica #Lo-Fi #Noise #PsychedelicRock

Alluria is from Santiago De Querétaro, Mexico.
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on mes?
Alluria: [My] answer is little funny, because it exposes my auto-induced creativity in moments of big stress. In this point of my life i’m finalizing a master degree, and when i feel the pressure of time, automatically my head starts to work another channels. The name of the record (“mes”) is, literally, “month”, in relation with the delivery time of my thesis writing, haha.
TMODM: What record changed your life?
Alluria: wow. It’s difficult to priorize one by one my favorit (conceptual) albums the influenced and changed my life, but if i can show you my top 3, i like “golevka” by evpatoria report, “de-loused inthe comatorium” by the mars volta, and “atemahawke” by porter (my favorite mexican band of all time).
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Alluria: the next plans that i have for this and next year are, first, the remastering of my ex-solo project “birdo” with the support of my musician friends (from querétaro). it will be an “commercial version” of my old mockups. The personal new “one-man-band” is now called “ailuria” (as you can see in the last two demo records, included “mes”) and it will be devoted to noise rock with melodic patterns.

Chatham Rise

#Experimental #Atmospheric #Psych #Psychedelic #Shoegaze

Psychedelic / space rock / shoegaze band based in Minneapolis. Members: Tim, Collin, Sam, Ben, Brian.
Riddle Remix is a collaboration with Mark Refoy, singer/guitarist for The Tell Tale Hearts (UK), Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, Pet Shop Boys, currently in Slipstream.
TMODM: How did the collaboration with Mark Refoy come about?
CR: I’ve stayed in touch with the Rugby space rock contingent over the years and we share music back and forth.  I sent Mark “The Riddle” and he liked the song and asked if I “ever thought of stripping the song down a bit and adding some Telecaster and Rickenbacker back into the mix” and I responded “did you”? And he had several guitar tracks for me a few days later to sift through… we are honored to have him play on one of our songs as his music has been and influence on ours over the years from Soacemen 3 to Spiritualized to Slipstream.
TMODM: What has had the strongest influence on your music?
CR: I’d say the strongest influences on our music are space, water and the skies in between, of course along with RIDE, Spacemen 3, Galaxie 500, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spiritualized and My Bloody Valentine – we’ve been lucky enough to play with the majority of these bands or members of them. Mark Gardener of RIDE has also mixed out a few songs for us.
TMODM: What record changed your life?
CR: The album that changed my life is probably The Brian Jonestown Massacre “And This Is Our Music” … it is a record that drove the founding members of Chatham Rise to start writing and recording original music. I remember hanging out with Anton Newcombe in New York and him saying to me “If you have so many great ideas, why don’t you start your own fucking band?” I took his advice.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
CR: Chatham Rise are currently in final mixing stages of our new LP, “Trillium” and hope to release the record in the early fall. “Riddle Remix” will be one of the songs on the LP. We’ve been taking our time with it but are excited to get the music out there!
