This episode of Turn Me On, Dead Man is a journey through some of the most compelling new psychedelic music being released today. As I’ve mentioned in the past, my work schedule has changed and so I’ve been releasing episodes more slowly this year. Rather than the usual one-hour episode, this is a double episode, and the second half includes more expansive, immersive tracks. This program showcases the diverse and innovative nature of the current psychedelic music scene. playlist that features new artists making their mark alongside some veteran acts that have been pushing the boundaries of the genre for decades.

A number of independent labels are doing the essential work of getting this music out to the world. I want to highlight Rocket Recordings. The label’s new “Black Hole” series is described on their Bandcamp page as “a place where the unorthodox, otherworldly and esoteric can flourish,” and Moundabout’s Goat Skull Table is a great start to this series. The album is a powerful metaphysical travelogue that feels like a transmission designed to induce trance states and give flight to spectral visions. We also hear from other great labels like Aural Canyon, Little Cloud, Fuzzed Up & Astromoon Records, WV Sorcerer, Riot Season and Heavy Psych Sounds, which are all consistently releasing compelling music that is pushing the genre in new directions.

While the genre has its historical roots in places like San Francisco and London, psychedelic music now comes from all over the world. This global perspective results in a wider array of sounds, and this playlist runs the range from heavy psych to world music.

Pink Breath of Heaven is from San Francisco. Following the success of their breakout single “Blue Is the Morning”, PBOH spent the past year crafting a sonic landscape that merges the vast textures of shoegaze with the boundless energy of modern psychedelia. From hypnotic, slow-burning compositions to towering walls of sound, the album immerses listeners in a world where color and emotion intertwine, leaving echoes long after the music fades.

Viv and The Sect

#GarageRock #GarageRock #PsychedelicPop #Psychedelic

Mexican garage-psych band from Mexico City, formed in 2012, initially as a trio.
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Viv and The Sect (the album)?
VIV & The Sect: We’ve been listening to a lot of different music from what we were hearing during the making of the first album. As for music in English we listened to a lot of Arthur Lee’s “Love “ , Allah Lahs, question mark, but also a lot of different things that nobody would expect, like even a bit of “Rush “ we tried to mix a lot of different things and put them into the blender. Since this is an album in spanish mostly, with the exception of only one track, we listened to a lot of Latin garage like, los salvajes, henry nelson.
TMODM: What records changed your lives?
Aleph (guitar player): The Ventures – Walk Don’t Run
Wako (keyboards): Los Chijuas – El Esquimal
Rombo (drums): Los Belkings – Ayer y hoy
Mariner (vocals): Led Zeppelin – IV
Mayo (Bajo): Bob Dylan – blood on the tracks
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Viv & The Sect: We’re about to release on vinyl this new record, and we’re promoting it touring Mexico after our tour in Europe, also we just got out of the studio to record this new double single for the French label rogue records, so stay tuned for new music in the coming months.

The Miracle Seeds

#AcidRock #Psych #Psychedelic #PsychedelicRock

Miracle Seeds are from Scotland. Jack McAfee – vocals, guitars, bass, organ, synths, percussion, field recordings, samples Alex Ritchie – guitar (tracks 4, 6 & 7) Lukas Bönschen – Drums (tracks 1, 5, 8 & 9), Percussion (track 5) Liam Cole – Drums (tracks 2-4) Sean Morrison – Keyboard (track 2)
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Nuclear Watermelon?
Miracle Seeds: Strongest influences were bands like the black angels, Ty segall and king gizzard
TMODM: What were the recording sessions like?
Miracle Seeds: The recording took place sporadically over a couple of years, but by the time a certain song was ready to take to the studio it was pretty much 95% worked out and rehearsed due to the long periods in between recording. There were still some spontaneous moments and improvised guitar solos such as in Follow the river’s climax.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Miracle Seeds: Next we are aiming to play a lot more gigs!

Welcome Strawberry

#Alternative #Alternative #IndieRock #PsychedelicRock #Shoegaze

Oakland’s Welcome Strawberry return with Desperate Flower, their lush sophomore LP and a co-release from à La Carte Records and Cherub Dream Records. Blending shimmering dream-pop, homespun psychedelia, and restless experimental textures, the album balances intimacy with expansiveness. Lead single “Memory Cube” pulses with hypnotic energy, while “Violets & Honey” channels the jangle of C86 pop. The title track blooms into kaleidoscopic psych-pop, nodding to Elephant 6 icons and kiwi pop legends alike. At once nostalgic and forward-thinking, Desperate Flower is a vivid, hazy journey through melody and memory.
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Desperate Flower (the album)?
Welcome Strawberry: musically just that magical indie era circa 2008-2010 where Deerhunter, AnCo, and Grizzly Bear could not be stopped. So many insane records from all kinds of bands from that time period, I’m still recovering
TMODM: What records changed your lives?
Welcome Strawberry: in order: the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack, strokes-Room on Fire, ATCQ- midnight marauders, AnCo – Sung Tongs, Wild Nothing – Gemini
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Welcome Strawberry: working on art for another release that is finished, hoping to tour a bit next year, always demoing & writing after being inspired by others

The Roaring 420s

#Psychedelic #Freakbeat #GarageRock #Sitar

Blending surf rock and late 60s pre-Punk into Eastern psychedelia The Roaring 420s from Dresden, Germany, rather sound like an obscure little gem discovered at a garage sale in California. Roughly located somewhere between The Beach Boys and The Velvet Underground, they’re bursting out with twangy guitars, groovin’ organ and an electric sitar! Florian Hohmann – vocals. guitars, keyboards, sitar Martin Zerrenner – bass, vocals Luisa Mühl – drums, vocals Paul Riemer – additional vocals, piano, percussion I corresponded with Florian Hohmann.
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on We’re all in it together?
The Roaring 420s: The strongest influence on this album, I’d say were the encounters and situations we had while touring. We played many tours with our friends from California, The Blank Tapes, and already had the idea for a tour documentary when we’ve been on the road for six weeks straight in 2014. Many songs are directly inspired by those real-life situations. Songs about break-ups, drugs, endless nights and some lessons you can learn while being on the road together with people. We’ve been listening to Joe Cocker’s “Mad Dogs & Englishmen” in the car a lot and I took this line “Learning to live together” from “Space Captain” for one of our songs because it pretty much says it all. Other artists that had been on permanent rotation were bands like White Fence, Strange Boys, Allah-Las and Lou Reed.
TMODM: What records changed your lives?
The Roaring 420s: Can’t really speak for the others but definitely the first Velvet Underground album. Coolest record ever and punk af. Also, Link Wray. He’s my hero and whenever I try out a new guitar, the first thing is to select the bridge pick-up and then play “Rumble”. Doors of course, most I know about organ playing I’ve learned from Ray Manzarek. So yeah, all the classics, haha. However, I discover lots of amazing new bands every year and that keeps on being an inspiration as well.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
The Roaring 420s: We’re having a couple shows in Germany with our friends from Seattle, Forest Ray, who are embarking on a European tour in September. And in October, we’re playing a few shows with french singer Kacimi who will be also bringing out a new album (which I highly recommend). Aside of that, we’re already working on new stuff so let’s see.

HEX

#Experimental #Alternative #ArtRock #AvantGarde #DarkPop #Noise #Post-punk #Psychedelic #Soundtrack #Synth

HEX is an experimental rock band based in Geneva, active since 2011. Formed by members from Equus, Commodore, and Shora, the group crafts a hypnotic sonic universe blending abrasive guitars, shadowy synths, and cinematic textures. Their debut album I, released on Hummus Records, fuses industrial influences, EBM rhythms, film score atmospheres, and post-rock sensibilities. Following several lineup changes, most recently the arrival of Léa Martinez and Wladislas Marian, the band is entering a new creative cycle, driven by immersive live performances and ever deeper sonic exploration. HEX is currently preparing the release of its next album, scheduled for fall 2025 on HUMUS RECORDS, reaffirming its unique position in the swiss alternative music scene.
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on II?
Hex: It’s hard to give a clear answer about the influences behind II. Some of the ideas go back several years, and the project has changed a lot, in terms of lineup, personal tastes, and overall direction.
We focused more on sonic textures and contrasts than on specific bands. On one hand, we were inspired by the dissonant elements of no wave and by the textures found in musique concrète and electroacoustic music. On the other, there’s also a more melodic and sometimes pop-oriented side and many tracks follow a prog rock structure, with longer forms and shifting sections. There’s also a stronger vocal presence on this album compared to the first one.
If we had to name a couple of artists, Oranssi Pazuzu and Glenn Branca definitely come to mind. But each member brings their own influences. Depending on who adds elements during the writing phase, a piece might lean toward something more accessible and melodic or move in a more abstract and dissonant direction.
TMODM: What record(s) changed your lives ?
Hex: Though we all come from different musical backgrounds, from punk, metal and hardcore to indie rock, there are some albums that brought us together. Red by King Crimson and Close to the Edge by Yes, in particular, had a lasting impact on us when we first discovered them.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Hex: We went through a few lineup changes just before recording, which naturally shifted the dynamic. But we’re excited to play live again soon, and we’re still working on a few tracks. We’re curious to see where this new phase will take us.

The Warlocks

#Psychedelic #IndieRock #PsychedelicPop #PsychedelicRock

American indie rock/shoegazing band founded in 1998 in Los Angeles. The Warlocks started because of the their mutual love of all things Rock and Roll. We love a lot of the 60s, 70s and some 80s inspired music. We are not a retro band though. We all always try new stuff and from time to time hit something great.

Misha Sultan is a multi-instrumentalist originally from Novosibirsk in the heart of Siberia. His hometown’s location, in the hinterlands between Europe and Asia provides a deep well of inspiration for his music. On their 2nd aural meeting, Misha & Sergei conjure magic as 2 lifelong friends meet in the middle zone to craft something entirely NOW. Floating loops, nature field recordings & shimmering sound connections take you on a journey that’s alien but oh so familiar.
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on THAI?
Mikhail Gavrilov: Honestly, there weren’t any particular influences. We just improvised as usual and had fun with it.
Sergey Dmitriev: There was no specific idea or strong concept. It started in the year 2021 with loops (some of them are field recordings from Thailand) which i prepared for my live performance, later Misha overdubbed it with guitar, bass and flute. Two Interlude tracks are fully improvised and recorded live. And in 2024 we met each other in Thailand overdubbed it one more time) and finished. So it was a long story
TMODM: What records changed your lives?
Mikhail Gavrilov: There were a few records that made a big impact at different times in my life:
1. *Nirvana – Nevermind*
2. *Aphex Twin – Come to Daddy*
3. *Sun Araw – On Patrol*
Sergey Dmitriev: Aphex Twin – Selected Ambient Works 85-92, Boards of Canada – Music Has The Right To Children, Vladislav Delay – The Four Quarters…..and two local bands from St. Petersburg: Zelany Rashoho and Caribace mainly there live performance changed me a lot….
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Mikhail Gavrilov: I’ll be releasing a solo album soon on DIG Records.
Sergey Dmitriev: My collaboration album with Sergei Komarov on Hair Del. records gonna be released soon….Also working on my new solo stuff, hope to finish it this autumn)

Karl Lihn

#Ambient #Electronica #Experimental #Psychedelic #SpaceRock #PsychedelicRock #SpaceRock

Composer and producer. In search of sounds and colors of the universe. Based in Pucón, Chile.
TMODM: What had the biggest influence on Immortal Soul?
Karl Lihn: Since I left the city and didn’t have a band to make my music with, I’ve had to learn how to use different machines. A friend here taught me. From there, I began to explore a completely different kind of sound. I liked how the foundations of techno and analog electronics intertwine with the more experimental guitars and atmospheres I’m used to, which are related to shoegaze and ambient. So I’d say my biggest influence for this album is the machines themselves and all that new knowledge.
TMODM: What were the recording sessions like?
Karl Lihn: The recording sessions are very simple in my small studio room. I only use an ART analog preamp, an AKG 214, and an SM57 for recording. The guitars and synthesizers go to the Fender Deville. The rest is just mixing.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Karl Lihn: I’m already working on a new album, which will be released at the end of the year on a local label. Where I live, I have no trouble finding inspiration, and I’m always learning new things that can contribute to my creative process. I hope to make a lot of music while I have the opportunity.

TMODM: Why release this as Mushroom rather than Astralasia or the Magic Mushroom Band? What defines a Mushroom record?
Mushroom: the diff between astralasia and mushroom band is that the mushroom is more organic, free flowing and originates from human interplay from source as where as astralasia its more sync to computers ,beats ,but those lines get blurred, like they do.

Mushroom: wood for the trees fungus 20 is the latest in our mushroom band happenings, its almost all recorded live and very raw, minimal overdubs.

Moundabout

#Alternative #IrishFolk #Psychedelic #Drone #FolkRock #Pagan #PsychedelicFolk #Psychedelic

Rocket Recordings’ new Black Hole series is a place where the unorthodox, otherworldly and esoteric can flourish, and there could be no more fitting first release for it than the most powerful metaphysical travelogue yet from Moundabout. Journeying still further into and beyond the landscapes from which this duo have unearthed inspiration, ‘Goat Skull Table’ is a transmission to give flight to spectral visions and include trance-states in abundance. The vibrations and manifestations of the duo of Paddy Shine (GNOD) and Phil Langero (Los Langeros, Damp Howl, Bisect) has always resonated within a very specific sense of place. This third release for Rocket Recordings sees them colluding with the landscape of their surroundings. transcending linear narratives and astral planes in a quest to unite timeless spirits with inner space. The title track marks a focal point here; a shamanic rite on which Langero’s charismatically charged mantras collude with an audial landscape somewhere on the map between the abstract spell-casting of Nurse With Wound and the druidic gnosticism of Julian Cope. This is Moundabout at their darkest and most ritualistic. Elsewhere, the hypnotic repetition of the twin ten-minute extrapolations ‘Blood On My Blanket’ and ‘Wagon’, and the potent incantatory chants of ‘Am I Not’ and ‘Brave New World’ glow with a rugged and charged dynamism redolent of the Swedish psychedelia of Träd, Gräs & Stenar, uniting a minimal aesthetic with maximal impact. Dauntless, feverish, and reaching new heights of primal intensity ’Goat Skull Table’ is a formidable field guide to the earthen and other.
