This collection of tracks from artists like Ghostwoman, L.A. Witch, and Night Beats provides a clear sense of a particular sonic landscape. There’s a noticeable embrace of vintage sounds, characterized by fuzz, reverb, and a driving, somewhat unvarnished energy. These are tracks that seem to invite the listener to settle in, allowing the textures and rhythms to unfold without feeling rushed. The instrumentation feels direct and organic, contributing to an immersive atmosphere that hints at the raw power inherent in well-crafted rock music.
As the playlist progresses through bands such as Goat, Frankie & The Witch Fingers, and The Heads, a deeper vein of adventurousness emerges. Here, the psychedelic leanings expand into more exploratory areas, sometimes incorporating a heavier, almost ritualistic groove, or extended jams that reward attention. Whether through the global infusions of Goat’s sound or the direct, propulsive nature of Frankie & The Witch Fingers, there’s a common thread of pushing beyond conventional song structures, allowing the music to build in a way that feels both deliberate and unconstrained.
Finally, with artists like Grails, The Myrrors, and Ty Segall, a genuine commitment to musical exploration and expression emerges. These tracks establish their own worlds without feeling indulgent. Like the rest of the tracks in this playlist, these songs rock but they also invite listeners to engage on a more thoughtful level.
The drops in this episode come from a 1963 LP called The Big Sound of the Drags. Columbia Records made a number of recordings of races at dragstrips and really focuses in on roaring engines. They definitely get the point across. The cover image was generated by ChatGPT.

The Myrrors is an experimental folk-rock band originally founded by Nik Rayne, Grant Beyschau, and Claira Safi in 2007 and hailing from the Arizona desert. The band plays what they describe as “Sonoran trance music,” a combination of droning psychedelic rock, classical minimalism, and international music forms. The group has undergone numerous lineup changes over the course of their existence.
Following a period of relative quiet, legendary Sonoran drone rock ensemble The Myrrors returns with their latest aural broadside. Founding members N.R. Safi (Naujawanan Baidar) and Grant Beyschau (Tambourinen, Pirámides) reunited with viola player Miguel Urbina in their desert hometown in late 2021 for a marathon week of improvisation and recording, yielding the material for what should have been the immediate follow-up to their panoramic 2018 album Borderlands. Four years of global tumult later, we can finally hear the results – and tragically the material seems even more relevant now than ever before.
