Chino Burga

#Ambient #Kosmische #Drone #Minimal #Post-rock #SpaceRock

Echoes, drone and loops from Cusco, Peru
TMODM: How would you describe your influences on Technologia en la Religion Futura?
Chino Burga: I think it comes from a rising interest in sufism and their meditative state  when dancing, I find it fascinating how repetition works in terms of religion. The original idea was to work with eastern music samples only but suddenly, after a while, I found myself between a lot of different samples from different places, cultures and beliefs and the common ground was the devotional and hypnotic vibe. As influences would say Dead Can Dance and Muslimgauze of course as well as Scorn, Seefeel, Craig Leon and Alexandra Atnif.
TMODM: What were the recording sessions like?
Chino Burga: It was like doing a puzzle where you can see (or hear in this case) the idea of the whole picture (due to the samples) but not the details. So I just added some beats and basses and kept it as minimal as possible, while sounding corrosive, mechanical and distorted as well as a counterpoint with the chants, trying to get like a lost AM radio transmission sound. Eventually the whole image came through the wall of dub’s delays and reverbs.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Chino Burga: Guess gonna walk the dogs in a while..at this point, have no idea beside that . Just taking a day at the time. We’ll see tomorrow.

Bhajan Bhoy

#Alternative #EsotericElectronica #KosmischeGuitar #MelodicMantras #PsychMagick #SonicRagaTrips

Deep meditative music filled with kosmische guitar psych magick / sonic raga trips / melodic mantras / esoteric electronica that thrill and elevate the listener to a higher sonic plane. From NH, Netherlands.
TMODM: How would you describe your influences on Bhoy On The Wire?
Bhajan Bhoy: I went into the studio with a time frame within which I had to compose the music, edit and mix it, and get it mastered (January to March 2024). To that end, the ideas have to come out pretty quickly. But I thrive in working under such conditions…I find it brings the best out of me. When you go into a space / studio to make music, there are always going to be obvious and also subliminal influences at play…..no musician can deny that there music isnt in some way influenced by something they heard, saw, read, smelt, touched. Whilst I cant pinpoint a direct musical influence, I am always listening to a ton of records at home and also tuning into great radio shows from around the world. I’m pretty sure something I might have heard at breakfast that made me sit up, possibly indirectly crept and transfigured into a piece I was writing / recording that day. All the songs on this album were recorded for a session for the “On The Wire” radio show (and hit was broadcast in April 2024). Like the show itself, the songs are varied, wide ranging and interesting in styles, but there is a common thread of real quality running through them.
TMODM: What were the recording sessions like?
Bhajan Bhoy: I basically spent days and nights between January and March 2024 locked up in my studio, picking up different instruments, and seeing where playing them would lead. In that respect it was a very open and organic transformation from ideas being formed and slowly being turned into compositions / pieces of music. Alot of stuff is heavily multilayered, and the real work begins by the editing / mixing / production phase. It’s there that the process of turning the music into a real composition begins….creating light and space and dynamics. Sometimes when I’m mixing, I often think about what would King Tubby do hahahaha. That helps me create the space and movement in the music.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Bhajan Bhoy:I will release a BHAJAN BHOY double album in June 2025 called “Summer In St. Mary’s”. It’s an incredibly beautiful and personal album that I recorded in the 16th century church St. Mary’s in South Cowton, North Yorkshire in England in the summer of 2023 on a 19th century organ that is in there. The pieces are 10 minutes long and there are 8 compositions on the LP. The music is meditative, drony, motifs with repetition that throw you into a deep trance when you listen to it. I absolutely love this record and cant wait for the world to hear it too.
I am also busy working on a CHELA studio album that will come out next year. CHELA are myself and Kohhei Matuda (Bo Ningen). We recently played at Le Guess Who? festival for 800 people, and it was a huge success. The recording of that show will also be released next year.
Added to that I play with WATER DAMAGE and we will have an LP out in September of the show we played at Le Guess Who? festival. We will tour in Europe at the end of August / start of September.
BHAJAN BHOY will play shows in NL / UK in the weekend of 14 February (in support of the release of my LP) and will also tour in Italy at the start of May and do a tour of NL at the end of May with English band JABU.

Friend of a Friend

#Electronica #Experimental #ArtRock #ArtRock #AvantPop #IndieRock

Friend of a Friend formed in the summer of 2020 after a lifetime just missing each other. Since the 2022 release of their debut album “In Arms,” recorded on tape in Nashville, they’ve toured relentlessly throughout Europe and North America. Their sophomore album “FACILITIES” was recorded in-studio in Joshua Tree, California with Jordan Lawlor (M83, J. Laser) and released in 2024.
TMODM: What has had the strongest influence on your music?
Friend of a Friend: our connection to each other // the light within prevails
Colin (Fresh paint Music): I think Chicago’s music scene is also a solid influence on the band since there’s such a strong independent music scene and hub of independent venues that can support it.
I’ll also add that I think M83’s Jordan Lawlor work as their producer shines through on FoaF’s music, really drawing out that climatic and cinematic feel to their songs.
TMODM: What record(s) changed your lives?
Friend of a Friend: all the Radiohead records were like revelations for us, in particular Kid A
more recently – Rosalía’s Motomami
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Friend of a Friend: right now we are on tour in Europe
our 3rd album “Desire!” is available for preorder + the second single “oasis” is released on February 19 via Earth Libraries
“Desire!” is out April 25th

TMODM: What were the recording sessions like for Avant-Kraut Garden?
El Universo: The main goal for this album was to perform it live, and everything was recorded with that goal in mind.

Pretty Lightning

#Experimental #Psychedelic #Ambient #Soundtrack #Fuzz #Groove

Psych Blues Duo got stuck in a woozy loop of cowboy groove.
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Night Wobble?
Pretty Lightning: That must be the concept of the album itself. The idea behind Night Wobble was to write a soundtrack for an imaginary walk into the forest after dark while trotting at a steady pace, perceiving the environment attentively. Means not so much of both rushing and dragging, but rather trying to provide a consistent flow. If an idea made us “move comfortably”, we pursued that track to see where it may lead.
TMODM: What record(s) changed your lives?
Pretty Lightning: Not sure if I would call it live changing”, but listening to FRANCE´s ‘Do Den Haag Chruch” was truly mind blowing. It´s a very special and unique album. Actually it´s one song that spans over both A and B side. Highly recommended!
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Pretty Lightning: Releasing a live session that was shot in our studio and preparing for a little tour in april and may, really looking forward.

Khunathi

#ChineseUnderground #Cosmic #Drone #Experimental #Noise #PsychedelicRock #Shakuhachi

Formed in 2019, this improv / psychedelic rock band weaves tales of Xiyu (Western Regions of China) and crafts apocryphal sutras. They aim to capture the brilliance of spontaneous creativity, yet often fall short—much like one can never step into the same Khunathi River twice. The Khunathi River (Qiunaodihe) lies approximately 200 miles southwest of the western section of the Karakoram. According to legend, anyone who drinks from its waters will be compelled to dance non-stop. Later, anatomists identified a neural center responsible for motor control and named it the subthalamic nucleus (Qiunaodihe) in honor of this mythical connection.
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on 潮氣吹過後山破廟時 Misty Mountain Pagoda?
Khunathi: 大唐西域记 (Da Tang Xi Yu Ji)”The Great Tang Records on the Western Regions,” written by monk Xuanzang in the 7th century Tang Dynasty, documents his pilgrimage to India to obtain Buddhist scriptures. It details Central Asian and Indian geography, culture, and Buddhism, inspiring classics like Journey to the West 西游记. We read the stories together and jam for the scene we had in mind. That’s basically how we created our pieces.
TMODM: What records changed your lives?
Khunathi: Kyotaku 虚鐸 by Nishimura Koku, 《上海经典流行摇滚金曲十三首》13 pieces of Shanghai Classical Pop Rock Songs, In Rainbows by Radiohead, Ground up by Snarky Puppy
for each of us
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Khunathi: Maybe Gamelan.

Daemones

#GarageRock #Psych #PsychedelicRock #SpaceRock

Daemones are from Portland, Oregon Steve Galloway MJ Herlihy Craig Allen Cox Eric Block (Keith Brown)
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Through the Gale?
Daemones: Through the Gale took a good bit longer than we anticipated, as our long-time drummer Keith moved down to the Palm Springs, CA area on short notice right as we were scheduling time to record this EP. The songs themselves dealt with quite a bit of personal themes going along with the lead singer MJ during a divorce and some additional life chaos immediately prior to that time. That kind of stuff always makes for a good time to dive into creative endeavours tho, right? Our previous album, Petrichords, focused on a more cosmic positivity across much of the lyrics, which was juxtaposed against our off-kilter brand of garage-y psychedelia. Through the Gale has a more skeptical and wearied focus for our sound, which has helped give this batch of songs its own little identity, we feel.
TMODM: What records changed your lives?
Daemones: Hah, you’ll definitely get a more nuanced answer from each of us on this question. Since I’m answering this message tho, I’ll drop a couple (16 is a “couple”, right?…it’s a solid number either way) of long-time favourites that helped steer me (for better or worse) with my music over the years.: Pink Floyd – Meddle, Hum – You’d Prefer an Astronaut, The Velvet Underground – Loaded, The Residents – Icky Flix Soundtrack, Yes – The Yes Album, Wire – Chairs Missing, Van Morrison – Astral Weeks, CAN – Tago Mago, Spiritualized – Fucked Up Inside, Brian Eno – Music for Airports, Slint – Spiderland, Funkadelic – s/t, Mogwai – Ten Rapid, Sunny Day Real Estate – Diary, Dirty Three – Horse Stories, Beck – Stereopathetic Soul Manure
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Daemones: Well, we’re back at it with a new drummer at this point. We’ve got some live support planned for this new EP, then are going back to recording an additional EP’s worth of new tunes that are already ready to go. Definitely looking forward to crankin’ out the new tunes and help refine what the band sounds like with our new drummer, Eric, behind the skins.

See Night

#IndieRock #Alternative #DreamPop #FreakFolk #PianoMusic #Psych #Shoegaze

See Night is the project of guitarist and singer-songwriter Linda Sao, who tours with an incredible band (drummer Cory Aboud, guitarist Patrick Andrews, and bassist AJ Marquez) known for an explosive live show, and also solo in the U.S., EU and UK
TMODM: What has had the strongest influence on Just Another Life?
Linda Sao: The album reflects on the lives we lead and ultimately leave behind to start fresh, whether intentionally through touring or unintentionally due to the death of a loved one or the end of a relationship. A lot of the songs were written during the pandemic when the world was suddenly at a halt. I was stuck inside, really longing to tour, and thinking about the many lives we can live within one lifetime. And it’s those rare moments of feeling at home with a person’s presence or a place, amidst a life of so much change, that fuel the romantic songs on this release. Sonically, the influence of the production team (co-producer Tres Sasser, engineer/mixer Joe Costa, and mastering engineer Brian Lucey) and the other musicians cannot be overstated; they elevated and expanded the songs so masterfully and rather spontaneously.
TMODM: Are you going to tour?
Linda Sao: I’m working on a Midwest tour with my full band for this spring along with the usual West and East Coast runs this year. I also hope to do more solo touring around SoCal now that I’ve moved to LA, in addition to eventual EU/UK returns. My ultimate dream-goal is to more consistently be a tour opener for larger acts I respect and enjoy both musically and personally.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Linda Sao: For Just Another Life, I’m working on self-releasing it on vinyl. For life in general, I’m trying to establish my new musical and personal lives in my latest hometown of Los Angeles.

Chaos Emeralds

#Alternative #Electronica #Experimental #Ambient #Emo #Noise #Post-punk #Post-rock #Shoegaze

Loops / drone / psych / doom / noise / emo / etcn from Scotland
TMODM: How would you describe your influences on Passed Away?
CB (Charlie Butler): When I started doing Chaos Emeralds as a solo instrumental project I was going for a kind of noisy shoegaze / emo / slowcore sound, influenced by bands like Duster, Codeine, Weed, Deerhunter, MBV and Yo La Tengo. As the sound developed over a few releases I started to broaden the sound a bit to include some heavier influences like Jesu, Boris, bits of black metal, stuff like that. When I got to starting work on “Passed Away” I realised all the tracks were very “song-like” in structure and weren’t really working as instrumentals so I asked Sean if he wanted to join the band on lyrics and vocals. I’m very glad he said yes and bought his immense talents to the table to elevate these songs to heights I could never have got anywhere near alone.
SH (Sean Hewson): What Charlie sent me were actually pretty classic songs/riffs that I’d put up against Nirvana or Smashing Pumpkins, but all put through the Charlie filter. I generally bring a bit of drama, a kind of David Tibet thing with more melody and worse lyrics. There’s also a bit of Andrew Eldritch in there, again with the drama, but also with the dual vocals in different octaves.
TMODM: What were the recording sessions like?
CB: Everything was done remotely over a period of about a year or so. I recorded all of the music at home either in the garage or my front room in Lanark, Scotland. Sean recorded his vocals in Reading then sent them over to me and I then compiled and mixed everything in Audacity.
SH: Not much to add. This is our tried and tested approach – us in our separate homes, on our dodgy equipment that we are also learning how to use as we go along. Charlie’s become very good at mixing, especially with the vocals. It’s like having a wonderful tailor.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
CB: There are no plans for any more Chaos Emeralds at the moment but I will be working again with Sean in the future. I’m very proud of everything we have done together as Chaos Emeralds and Last Place. The long-awaited Head Drop album (fuzz rock band featuring me, Sean, Kev Wells and Nick Mann) may even appear in the near-ish future and I have a few solo releases on the way in the coming months.
SH: The Head Drop album is probably the next thing to concentrate on. Hopefully that will be out this year. Charlie and I will pick up either Chaos Emeralds or Last Place whenever inspiration next strikes. Working with Charlie is probably my favourite of the things that I do, I think we do pretty good work.
