This episode opens The Spyrals, The Barren Room and Grinding Eyes. The latest album from The Barren Room is a co-release from Worst Bassist and Tonzonen. The second set is bookended by bands from Japan, Zamboa and Barbican Estate. The Barbican Estate album is actually a compilation on Feral Child but is also being released by Echodelick. Barbican Estate is originally from Tokyo but relocated to London within the last couple of years. In between Zamboa and Barbican Estate is a jam from Space Shepherds. The Space Shepherds are from Belfast and the episode closes with two more Irish artists: Cormorant Tree Oh from Dublin and Luminous Rift from Galway. The last set also includes Ultraviolet Communication, who are on the Sundog Sound label.

The recordings between sets come from a 1962 album called Secrets of Self Defense. Martial arts expect John Richters draws on his expertise in an LP aimed primarily at women. Given the constraints of the LP format he explains, “to attempt a complete explanation here would be impossible.” Still, he indulges just enough Zen imagery to confuse any listener. I’m not sure exactly how he expects anyone to “empty your mind” when you are “face-to-face with your assailant” after just listening to this LP. I guess in 1962 people were fascinated with the LP format and eager to use it for a wide variety of self-help purposes.

The Barren Room are from Germany Oli Hilse – Guitar, Vocals (ex Urlaub in Polen) Lulu Neudeck – Bass (electric moon) Falko Schneider – Drums (sarkh)
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on White Clouds (the album)?
The Barren Room: I think our strongest influence on the album was one of the last concerts of Shellac in Amsterdam. We’ve been completely impressed by the incredible presence of all three musicians and what they did there. This band has reached a philosophical level in their interaction. Beautiful.
TMODM: What record(s) changed your lives?
The Barren Room: To name a few records that changed our lives: Wish You Were Here – Pink Floyd, PJ Harvey – Rid Of Me, Shellac – At Action Park
TMODM: What’s next for you?
The Barren Room: We’ll soon go back to our studio (Institut für angewandten Krach) and record two new songs for a single release. These tracks are our next level and the starting point for LP number 2, which we’ll hopefully record at the end of 2025.

Grinding Eyes are from Sydney, Australia
TMOSM: What had the strongest influence on Out Of Focus?
Grinding Eyes: Not sure if you mean – musically, emotionally!!
I would say musically, ‘out of focus‘ is slightly more refined than the previous albums, we’ve done.
We really diving into the sonic experience, and making the overall sound more of a layered landscape and a wall of sound, really using harmonics and tone more ever before..
TMODM: What record(s) changed your live(s)?
Grinding Eyes:
Spacemen 3 – sound of confusion
Tobacco – fucked up friends
Ghostwoman – hindsight is 50/50
Hawkwind – space ritual
Moon Duo – live at levitation
NEU – neu
Dinosaur Jr – you’re living all over me

Zamboa is a psychedelic Rock duo. started in 2014. Based in Tokyo, Japan. Ryo Shibuya & Takahiro Takeyama.
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on 未来?
Zamboa: If I were to identify the elements that had the greatest influence on the album 未来(Mirai), musically speaking, the first would be This Heat’s debut album.
Then, there’s the image of stretching out the sparse sections in certain tracks by King Crimson.
On a more personal level,
reading the lyrics written by Akisato Ito, the songwriter for my friend’s band Taiko Super Kicks,
made me realize that I, too, needed to seriously engage with writing poetry.
There’s also the daily exchanges with my bandmate Takahiro Takeyama, casual conversations during lunch breaks at work when I visited Tsubame Studio and chatted with its owner, Yui Kimijima, as well as conversations with my wife—all deeply local, personal interactions.
And then, there’s the quiet of a late-night room, where my child’s toys lay scattered in the aftermath of their play.
TMODM: What record(s) changed your lives?
Zamboa: Pink Floyd’s “Live at Pompeii” and Tame Impala’s “InnerSpeaker” & “30 Mins With Mathew Saville”(I believe the experience of endlessly listening to 30 Mins With Mathew Saville while reading Julio Cortázar is something that has been deeply “etched” within me.)
In life, it’s Elliott Smith’s Figure 8.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Zamboa: I have a vision of growing while staying small.
In today’s world, I’m no longer sure if becoming famous truly equates to happiness.
I want to remain “the next small thing.”
Ideally, I’d like to exist as something that’s largely unknown to the general public, yet has deeply dedicated fans scattered across the world. My hope is to continue releasing work in such a way.

Space Shepherds

#Instrumental #Jam #ProgRock #Psych #PsychedelicRock

Space Shepherds are a psych-rock jam band from Ireland.
TMODM: What was the biggest influence on this album?
Space Shepherds: I think the biggest influence was a mix of the psychedelic sounds of the 60s from bands like The Doors and Hawkwind, and a more modern spin on psychedelia which you might hear from the likes of Goat or Colour Haze. Really we’re kind of a mix of everything we’ve been listening to in the weeks running up to the recordings as the sounds get stored somewhere in the unconscious and brought out again in the playing, so we all tend to bring something a bit different to each other.
TMODM: What were the recording sessions like?
Space Shepherds: They were a blast, we were lucky to have Dale Hughes (Electric Octopus) manning the session and he’s a great guy to work with. Also, Steven Lennox (Junk Drawer) had joined us for the session, bringing his sitar with him and really laying into it throughout the day. We all bounced off each other and had a real blast just experimenting with different ways of playing and new sounds, so the jams were really fun for us in the room and I think the recordings are tinged with that fun.
TMODM: Are you going to be playing live shows?
Space Shepherds: We’re actually going to be playing our first show in Germany as part of Psychedelic Network Festival in Wurzburg (thank you Horst!) the day after we release this new album. After that it’s all in the air, but we’ll definitely be playing more shows in 2025 hopefully in and around mainland UK and Europe.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Space Shepherds: More jams man!

Ultraviolet Communication

#AcidRock #HeavyPsych #Jam #Psych #PsychPop #PsychRock #Psychedelic #PsychedelicRock

Ultraviolet Communication are a Psychedelic Rock trio based out of Los Angeles, California. The band formed in 2018 through responses to craigslist ads seeking other musicians to jam with. Their unique sound fuses hard-hitting, melodic guitar riffs and a soulful yet commanding lead vocal with tight, high energy live performances that are sure to leave you wanting more.
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Skull Chatter EP?
Ultraviolet Communication: The strongest influences would be a combination of watching live performances by bands that carry that same energy as well as performing ourselves. During the writing process of both songs, we experimented a lot with them live and they grew and evolved on the stage.
TMODM: What record changed your life?
Ultraviolet Communication: A myriad of albums have changed each of our lives! For Matt, 2112 – Rush and Lonerism – Tame Impala
For Lee, Piper at the Gates of Dawn – Pink Floyd, Anthem of The Sun – Grateful Dead, and Easter Everywhere – The 13th Floor Elevators
For Josiah, The Soft Bulletin – The Flaming Lips, and I’m In Your Mind Fuzz – King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Ultraviolet Communication: We are currently working on new material for our next album and trying to put on great live performances!

Cormorant Tree Oh

#FolkRock #Atmospheric #Drone #Experimental #Nature #Psych

Mary Keane, alias Cormorant Tree Oh, is a multi disciplinary artist and musician from Dublin.
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Moonish?
Cormorant Tree Oh: I honestly don’t know! Perhaps the actual moon?
TMODM: What record changed your life?
Cormorant Tree Oh: I would say the compilation Bearded Ladies on the Finders Keepers label had a massive influence on me. I remember feeling like these women were my kind and that there was a place for my particular brand of strange. I was pretty captivated by every track.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Cormorant Tree Oh: I am hoping to have my album launch early next year and to collaborate with videographer Zoe Greenway. I’m working on a Pavement cover which will be part of a compilation coming out early next year on cassette. I’m also working on new music in my other band Human Lanterns.

Luminous Rift

#FourTrack #Fuzz #HeavyPsych #HeavyPsych #Instrumental #Noise #PsychedelicRock #SpaceRock

Heavy psych/space rock band from Ireland. Ian Garner: Guitar/Bass/Drums/Sounds
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Atmasurya?
Luminous Rift: The strongest influence on AtmaSurya was reading the Hindu epic The Ramayana, specifically the tales of the deity Hanuman. Each track was inspired in some way from that. Musically it was influenced by listening to lots of Butthole Surfers/Loop/Bardo Pond and artists on the VHF Records label.
TMODM: Are you planning on playing any live shows?
Luminous Rift: I’m cooking up a possible live to tape jam collaboration with a few friends next year in the vein of the Psychedelic Source Records output (which I’m a big fan of) and those great Sunburned Hand Of The Man ‘live burn’ series records. If all goes well we may do some live shows.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Luminous Rift: More music, more records, possible physical releases.
