It’s been a month since the last episode of Turn Me On, Dead Man but it seems like much longer, as the news of the world just keeps getting grimmer. Not only that, but the heat wave we’ve been experiencing here on the US east coast just goes on and on. The bright spot, of course, has been a steady stream of great psychedelia.

The drops in this episode are from the 1955 album Strange To Your Ears by Jim Fassett. This album featured tape manipulations of ordinary sounds, anticipating the sound manipulation of the psychedelic era by several years. Fassett was the lead musical director at CBS radio and he would later use field recordings of birdsongs for his 1960 album Symphony of the Birds.

This album popped up in my list of suggested videos on YouTube. I’m not sure how YouTube’s algorithm works but it seems to know me disturblingly well. I try to be careful about what I click on but I guess it doesn’t take much to develop a profile of a user’s interests. I recently watched a TED Talk by Ian Bremmer entitled “The next global superpower isn’t who you think.” Rather than a nation-state, Bremmer pointed to the big tech companies and their control over us through the use of algorithms. Definitely worth watching and thinking about.

The music in this episode is more song oriented than most episodes of Turn Me On, Dead Man–no long improvised tracks, no droning experimentation (for the most part, anyway). The longest track in this episode is the opener by E Gone, which is less than seven minutes long. E Gone and another band from the opening set, Mary The Elephant are from Sweden. Other than those artists and Penza Penza, who is Estonian but based in Portugal, the rest of the tracks in this episode are from the Anglosphere. Brooklyn-based The Mystery Lights are in excellent form with a new album Purgatory. Other American artists in this episode are old favorites of Turn Me On, Dead Man The Albinos, Myrrs, and Tombstones In Their Eyes, alongside first-time tracks from The Acid Sisters, Dulad, Surreal Faces Group and Rose Cult. From elsewhere in the Anglosphere come two Canadian bands, The Strange Happenings and Gadfly, along with Psychlona from the UK and Unique Freaks from Ireland. Unique Freaks are actually another old favorite of Turn Me On, Dead Man, Thee UFO. Read the notes below for an explanation of their name change(s).

E Gone

#Experimental #Drone #FolkRock #Lo-Fi #PsychedelicFolk #PsychedelicRock

E GONE is Daniel Westerlund from Stockholm, Sweden, and ‘Adventures Before the Body’ is his long-awaited latest excursion into cosmically earthy musical alchemy, rounding out a trilogy of albums begun in 2013 with ‘All the Suns of the Earth,’ and continuing with ‘Advice to Hill Walkers’ in 2016 (both also released by Deep Water Acres and Sunrise Ocean Bender).
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Adventures Before The Body?
E GONE: Musically speaking it’s probably a mixture of seventies swedish progg stylings, New Weird America from the first decade of this century, american folk music and a small dosage of Al Cisneros.
TMODM: What record changed your life?
E GONE: There has been several transformations but the most significant when it comes down to it is Dark Noontide by Six Organs of Admittance.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
E GONE: I haven’t played live in several years and I am currently gearing up for some sort of performance.

The Mystery Lights

#Psych #PsychedelicRock #Punk #GarageRock #Psych #Psychedelic #Punk

Originally from the small town of Salinas, California and now based in NYC, The Mystery Lights’ live shows gradually became the stuff of legend as the quintet won their following one fan at a time in dives from Brooklyn to the Bowery. The Lights’ sound has evolved into a fuzz-fueled hopped-up 21st Century take on 60s garage pebbles, and artful 70s punk, that is all their own.
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Purgatory?
Mystery Lights: Purgatory was heavily inspired by our love for The Monks, Captain Beefhart & Soft Machine. The heavy use of the of toms, the playfulness of the vocals, and the “ascend to heaven or descend to hell” chant part were very Monks inspired, as well as the keys parts / solo. With a little mix of soft machine. The intertwining guitar / bass riffs for sure had heavy Beefheart influence in there. And the very end part has a lot of proto-metal / psych elements which we are also obsessed with.
TMODM: What record changed your life?
Mystery Lights: I’d say one that had a major impact on all of us I’m pretty sure (and probably anyone in rock n roll really) was The Velvet Underground and Nico. I know that’s definitely where La and I came from, which heavily shaped how we approached music.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Mystery Lights: New album ‘Purgatory’ out September 13th 2024 (Friday the 13th!) & we have a handful of 2024 fall tour dates announced, including shows in EU / UK / Canada / NY & North America!

Mary The Elephant

#Doom #Fuzz #Grunge #Grunge #StonerRock #StonerRock #StonerRock

Mary The Elephant is a rock band hailing from Sweden. Playing a blend of heavy and soft riffs with a melodic undertone, reminiscent of the early days. “Unleashing the Riffs of Decades Past” Hami Malek – Lead vocals Isaac Ingelsbo- Guitar, backing vocals Johan Fogelberg – Bass Doe – Drums
TMODM: What has had the strongest influence on your music?
MTE: That´s a hard question as many bands have influenced me, but if I had to narrow them down I would say, in no particular order:
Pantera, Down, C.O.C., Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, Crowbar, Entombed and Soundgarden.
TMODM: What record changed your life?
MTE: Another hard question … I have to go with which album I played the most … Pantera – Far Beyond Driven
TMODM: What’s next for you?
MTE: We in Mary The Elephant are working on the next EP and have come a long way with it. Probably a release at the beginning of next year.
Then I have my other band Sergeant Limbo. We are working on some songs for an upcoming release that will include songs we have once released. I don’t know when we will release that one though.

The Albinos

#Alternative #GaragePsych #GarageRock #IndieRock #Neopsychedelia #PsychedelicRock

The Albinos are a Noisy Garage Psych band formed in August 2023 in the woods outside Houston, Texas.
TMODM: What are you working on now?
Albinos: Writing and recording. Planning to release a full length in December and a few singles in between. Then we’ll most likely roam the country marauding for food and gasoline after the election.

Myrrs

#Alternative #Experimental #GarageRock #PsychedelicRock

MYRRS began in 2017 as a studio creative project that branched into a functioning live band that consists of Multi- Instrumentalist Oliver Meacham and Mastermind/Multi-Instrumentalist James Biven. the band has yet to settle on a style/genre with a history ranging from Psychedelia, Alternative, Metal, Electronic, Punk, Jazz and Lo-Fi to create the unique sound and work style the band upholds today
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Myrr Myrr?
Myrrs: I think the strongest influence was in a former sound of ours. Working on analog equipment, tape machines and looping instruments to make a more hypnotic sound that you find in our older material after experimenting in new ways we’ve found a solace in coming back to an old formula to create a new palette for this next chapter of ours.
TMODM: What are you working on now?
Myrrs: We’re currently going through a creative break to rejuvenate our approach to our live setup and recording some new ideas for future projects before we delve back into booking. We’ve cultivated so many ideas over the last year and a half that we haven’t had the time to manufacture so we’re finally sitting down with everything we’ve been working on and planning out multiple small releases throughout the rest of the year.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Myrrs: The next step for us is working with a very cool diy label in Portland, Oregon on a split EP with a new artist that we’re very excited to share with everyone. The label Soul Psych Records is run by some friends of ours as well as our biggest supporters so this release is very much anticipated for us.

Unique Freaks

#Experimental #Experimental #FolkRock #FreakFolk #GarageRock #Psychedelic

Unique Freaks aka Unique Freak Operation aka Thee U.F.O.
TMODM: Why are you releasing this as Unique Freaks rather than Thee UFO?
Unique Freaks: We were going to release it under the full U.F.O name “Unique Freak Operation” and over the next few releases get it down to “Unique Freaks” but we decided to bite the bullet and just cut it right down. To us U.F.O has stood for a few different things over the years (United Freedom Organisation, Uranium Fuelled Organism & Unique Freak Operation) now we feel like “Unique Freaks” is the right name for us in the direction we’re heading in.
TMODM: What are you working on now?
Unique Freaks: Not actively working on anything at the moment, fleshing out the odd idea but nothing serious. Next month we’ll start demoing for an album.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Unique Freaks: Our new EP “Glowing Friends Find Love” is out on the 27th of July, we’re playing a show in London that night and we’ll be playing some shows in Ireland over the next few months but we can’t announce anything just yet.

The Acid Sisters

#GarageRock #Psychedelic

The Acid Sisters are from Las Vegas, Nevada. Space daze desert rock squeezed from cactus needles and scorched canyon echo. I corresponded with Jacob (drums).
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Neon Graveyard?
Acid Sisters: I would follow Elayna, our singer’s, lead on this and repeat what she has said about Neon Graveyard. Much like our first album, this second one has a lot of inspiration from our city of Las Vegas itself. Neon flash, glitz, money, juxtapozed with decay everywhere, billion dollar casinos imploding in their own footprint, where new ones rise up a year or two later like nothing ever happened. Come on in, have a drink and sit for a while! Credit card or cash? Are you a gold status elite diamond club exclusive rewards ego stroke conceit member?
TMODM: What record changed your life?
Acid Sisters: I’ll sort of speak for all of the band members here and drop a record that we all agree on. Our individual tastes overlap and agree generally, but we all have our own specific style and tastes too. Exploding Head by A Place To Bury Strangers is probably the album that we all talk the most about, whether it’s in reference to a sound, a song part, a vibe, or an aesthetic. It’s safe to say that we all agree on being inspired by that record (even though we don’t really sound like APTBS), and it’s the first to come to mind for me, no question.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Acid Sisters: Up next we have a dance/house remix of Black Cherries from Neon Graveyard which will be released on July 19th, produced by our friend John the RT. A bit of a departure from our style, but he does cool stuff and we are excited to have a rad dance remix coming from a seasoned producer / artist / friend. We also have a handful of demos of new songs laid out and ready to be recorded for real. These might take the form of an EP with a few tracks on it, or they might all land on another full length LP.

Dulad

#DIY #Alternative #Eclectic #FreakFolk #Guitar #IndieRock #Lo-Fi #Psychedelic #PsychedelicRock

Dulad is from St. Louis, Missouri. Quality Tunes 2008-Present
TMODM: What has had the strongest influence on your music?
Dulad: The music and spirit of 80’s R.E.M. really pointed the way for me in a lot of ways. They were like a “how to” manual for those interested in playing in bands and writing songs. Like many people, I also have a wicked, lifelong Beatles habit.
TMODM: What record changed your life?
Dulad: This changes on a daily basis. There are a lot of records that could take this title. Today I am remembering the impact of hearing “Foolish” by Superchunk for the first time in 1994. This and a lot of other records from that era and scene were pretty formative for me and set me upon a certain path.
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Dulad: Currently musing about my next songs and recordings…(naturally!)

#Alternative #Neopsychedelia #Neopsychedelia #PsychRock #Shoegaze

Psych-rock from Los Angeles.
TMODM: What are your working on now? What’s next for you?
TITE: We have an album coming out on September 3 called Asylum Harbour.
And we are working on getting some new band members acclimated (new bass player and adding a singer/keyboardist) so that we can play some live shows soon. It will now be 7 people on stage so should be interesting.
Beyond that, we have plenty of new music to work on as well as a lot of tracks already recorded so the music will keep coming.

Gadfly

#Alternative #Punk #Surf #World #GarageRock #Psych #StonerRock

Slow builds and throbbing baselines, Gadfly is sure to provide a headbanging bass groove and a buttery smooth snare hit. Between underground shows, Homa Khoshnavaz and the Bugs get drunk and try their hardest to produce and album worth talking about despite the cut-throat nature of the vancouver rock scene. Homa Khoshnavaz: Guitar,Vocals Nigel Young: Drums,Vocals Raine Menard: Bass,Scream
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Sura?
Gadfly: our influences for this album were mainly Jucifer and Thee Oh Sees. Bands that push the energy and can mix the line between psychedelic and heavy music

Straight Arrows

#Punk #Coolest #GarageRock #Melodramatic #Psychedelic #Punk

Psychedelic punk from Sydney, Australia
TMODM: What had the strongest influence on Surface World?
Straight Arrows: Weird 45s, weird conversations, and weird old recording equipment in my studio that keeps breaking down.
TMODM: What record changed your life?
Straight Arrows: The first Os Mutantes album – it blew my mind when I was 17. It’s got everything you could want from an album – great pop songs, fuzz guitar, super weird samples, a whole world of lyrics in an exotic language I can’t understand, and absolutely incredible arrangements. I got to interview Sergio Dias from the band one time and he told me they’d never even tried drugs when they made it. They were just a bunch of weirdos. Perfect!
TMODM: What’s next for you?
Straight Arrows: We’re gonna release our new Album ‘Surface World’ on August 9 (on Rice Is Nice in Australia, Agitated in the UK/EU, and Lolipop in the USA), then we’re gonna tour australia for a month, and then come november we’ll tour around Europe and the UK. Can’t wait to buy heaps of records and see a whole lot of bands!
